Research Project Title: Fouling mechanism and control in membrane distillation
Membrane distillation (MD) is a pressure driven technology that can utilize low grade heat as power source and it is capable of treating hypersaline waters. It can be an alternative solution to oil/coal seam gas produced water treatment to replace the conventional technologies. Temperature and concentration polarization, along with fouling are the major existing issues in membrane distillation. Several studies were carried out on limiting polarization and fouling in MD and positive results were reported. Yet, polarization and fouling mechanism in membrane distillation have not been fully comprehended. This project therefore aims to:
1. Understand fouling mechanism in membrane distillation
2. Finding appropriate effluents for membrane distillation process and limit fouling
3. Membrane regeneration using physical/chemical methods
