Research Project Summary:
MBR CLEANING
Fouling is the main issue in membrane technology. In MBR, fouling can happen more severe. This is due to the membrane feed is biomass which is potential foulant. There are many ways to mitigate fouling and the most common and effective in restoring membrane performance is cleaning.

This project aims to investigate the performance of various chemicals. Current experiments are using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as the cleaner. Its optimum concentration will be examined in this experiment. Its effect to membrane properties will also be analysed because NaOCl is a strong oxidant agent which can react with polymer and change the membrane structure. For this purpose, SEM and tensile strength test will be performed.

In future work, we will also examine other chemicals, such as NaOH or enzymes, performance and effect towards membrane. Unwashed yeast solution will act as model solution, and the result will be later compared by using real wastewater as feed.
