Research Project Summary:
REMOVAL OF PROTEINACEOUS FOULANTS FROM MEMBRANES
My research focuses on the cleaning of ultrafiltration membranes fouled by aqueous protein mixtures. Membrane cleaning is
of particular interest as fouling is a major challenge in membrane application. Fouling causes an irreversible attachment of
proteins to the pores of the membrane that reduces performance however can be restored by proper cleaning procedure.
Another area of my research involve the computer modelling of mass transfer during the ultrafiltration of single and binary
proteins validated by experimental results on a cross flow rig.
In the study, single, binary and whey protein isolates in solution will be used as model foulants. Characterization
techniques such as 1D SDS-PAGE, MALDI-MS, FESEM and modified Lowry assay will be utilized and to quantify as
well as distinguish the protein deposition on the membrane after filtration. Simple and formulated cleaners and cleaning
protocols will be investigated for its effectiveness.
