Research Project:
THE EFFECT OF NANOPARTICLES (SYNTHESIZED BY SOL-GEL TECHNOLOGY AND FUNCTIONALIZED) ON THE FLUX AND FOULING PERFORMANCE OF FILTRATION MEMBRANES

Fouling by macromolecules during membrane filtration is a significant problem for many applications. Recently, the potential for nanoparticles embedded within or coating traditional polymer membranes have shown improvements in fouling performance. The mechanism for improved fouling performance is not yet elucidated and optimization of the coating material has not been fully explored. In this project, the effect of particle characteristics such as size, charge, and composition will be systematically studied with regards to their effect on fouling performance against protein and other macromolecular foulants. The effect of deposition thickness and density and treatment will also be explored using comprehensive surface characterization techniques.
