Research Project Summary
Research Project Title: Analysis of UF membrane fouling layer caused by organic interactions in seawater
Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes have been widely used as pre-treatment in seawater RO plants. However, high concentrations of algae during algal bloom can cause many issues in the operation of membrane desalination plants which lead to serious losses. Polysaccharides are one of the major constituents of extracellular organic matter released during algal bloom. Therefore, it is very important to understand the fouling mechanisms for polysaccharides and its interaction with other organic matter naturally present in seawater. Although UF membrane fouling due to polysaccharides and humic acids has been previously studied, the effect of high salt concentrations has not been studied extensively, and the fouling layer analysis did not go beyond specific cake resistance. Thus the aim of this study is to further analyse in detail the fouling layer structure caused by polysaccharide and humic substances in seawater solution and to understand the composition of each layer.
