International Links and Collaborations

European Union Collaborations

A significant component of the Centre's international collaboration in 2008 was ongoing research with the European Union Platform programs on water treatment, AMADEUS, EUROMBRA (http://www.mbr-network.eu/mbr-projects/workpacks-eurombra.php) and MEDINA (http://medina.unical.it). Centre members participate in on-going work packages within these programs as part of DEST International Linkage programs. Additional collaboration with Dr. Schausberger and Prof. Anton Friedl (Institute of Chemical Engineering, Vienna University of Technology) on CFD modeling of concentration polarization phenomena and Dr. Anja Drews (Technical University of Berlin) also continued in 2008.

International Research Workshop - India

Following the International Research Workshop 20-22 February 2008 held at UNSW, Dr. Le-Clech, Prof. Chen, and Dr. Anthony presented at the workshop "Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) for Wastewater Treatment" at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi and hosted by Dr. Malini Balakrishnan. The objectives were:
  • To provide an overview of MBR technology and the research being conducted at TERI and UNSW
  • How MBRs can contribute towards a step-change in wastewater treatment in emerging economies like India
  • Customization requirements and research gaps that need to be addressed.

Following the workshop, the UNSW team visited the MBR demonstration at Gual Pahari on 7th November 08 and had discussions with the TERI team regarding potential areas of collaboration.

Singapore Membrane Technology Centre

Professor Tony Fane (former co-Director of UNESCO Centre) has taken the role of Director of the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. This is a part-time (50%) position. The SMTC started in January 2008 and has initial funding for 5 years with a focus on membranes for water and the environment. The aim is to build strong ties between SMTC and the UNESCO Centre with the opportunity for student and staff exchange and collaboration in water related projects.
