Research Project Summary:
MEMBRANE SEPARATION OF PROTEIN -FATTY ACID MIXTURES
Protein - fatty acid interaction has been investigated in different studies on purification of plasma proteins, affinity
chromatography, and drug delivery methods. Spontaneous and reversible binding of fatty acids to large protein molecules
results large complexes, which can be separated from aqueous solutions by a membrane filtration step.The major objective of this research is to study the interaction in relation to ultrafiltration to develop methods to isolate the complex and separate fatty substances from aqueous solutions. Flux, binding of protein & fatty acids, stability of the complexes on filtration, fouling by proteins and fatty acids are being studied. Such studies will be useful in developing methods to separate residual fatty substances from some fruit juices before sterilization, treatment of wastewater from food processing plants, and protein separation.
