Research Project Summary:
NOVEL MEMBRANES WITH HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE BASED ON STAR-POLYMERS
This project focuses on the preparation of honeycomb structure films based on star-polymers for potential membrane application.
The star-polymers are synthesized using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) method. The casting solution is prepared
by dissolving the star-polymers into volatile solvents such as carbon disulfide (CS
2) or dichloromethane (DCM). Film casting is
carried out using self-assembly method under humid condition.
Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) is used to investigate the effect of star-polymers properties
(number and length of arms) as well as casting parameters on the film morphology. Casting parameters include concentration
of casting solution, type of solvent, humidity, moist airflow rate, temperature, additive, and casting using dip-coating method.
The mechanism of self-assembly formation is studied using microscope and CCD camera. The light scattering method will also be
designed to observe the formation of honeycomb structure films.
