Research Project Summary:
MONITORING FOR MEMBRANE FOULING ASSESSMENT
This project aims to develop an index, which captures the effects of feed components that genuinely cause fouling in
real world membrane treatment systems. This index will be a modification of existing fouling indices such as the Modified
fouling Index (MFI) and the Silt density Index (SDI) that gives a realistic estimate of fouling propensity of feed constituents.
In real applications, larger fouling species contribute less to membrane fouling due to inertial and shear effects, compared to
the smaller particles. A cross flow sampler CFS will be developed and employed upstream which will preferentially allow
smaller particles to be deposited on an MF/UF membrane. Isoporous membranes will be used in the crossflow sampler to
preferentially remove larger particles from the feed solution. Inorganic and organic foulants will be used as model solutes in
addition to real field samples to obtain experimental data. Successful removal of larger species from the feed solution will be
observed through the Direct Observation Through Membrane technique. The outcome of the project will enhance
understanding of the complex interplay of fluid mechanics, operating parameters and fouling propensity on membrane fouling.
