Research Project Summary:

Fouling is a major problem in membrane applications. Hence, cleaning is an important aspect for increasing the overall membrane performance. Many previous researches have focused on fouling and cleaning of membranes fouled by single and binary protein solutions while fouling and cleaning of membranes fouled by complex protein mixture, which represent most industrial applications, have not been fully studied.

In this project, the nature of the fouling of complex protein before and after cleaning will be characterized with both Lowry method and MALDI-MS (matrix assisted laser adsorption ionization mass spectrometry). The mechanism of enzymatic cleaning will be further explored to determine the major factors among the mass transfer, kinetic and diffusion or combination of those factors. A/Prof V. Chen
