John B Reid Theatre, AGSM (map ref: G27)

Scientia Professor Nigel Lovell and Professor Gregg Suaning have for nearly two decades spearheaded bionic eye research efforts in Australia. From 2010 – 2014 their UNSW team was part of a consortium called Bionic Vision Australia which worked on the design of one of the most advanced visual prostheses in the world. One of the outcomes has been a 99 electrode device, called the Phoenix99, which is currently undergoing pre-clinical testing at UNSW. Funding is also being sought for human clinical trials in the near future.

Come and meet Gregg Suaning and Nigel Lovell, co-leaders of the Bionic Eye Implant project and hear how the project has progressed from salvaging components from old cars and stereos more than a decade ago to a fully implantable device with the potential to restore vision to those suffering from profound vision loss.

About Nigel Lovell and Gregg Suaning

For the better part of two decades, Prof Gregg Suaning has played a leading role in implantable bionics in Australia.

Nigel Lovell is currently a Scientia Professor at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, UNSW.  Nigel is currently President-elect for the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) which is the world's largest member-based biomedical engineering professional organisation. He is a Fellow of five learned academies throughout the world and has been awarded over $76 million in research, consultancy and infrastructure funding in his career.
